And what do you mean by a clean chroot? Would a removed src folder do it?

Why do you need harfbuzz at all? Also, have you tried building in a clean chroot? I suspect this is work for you.

1. I tried building a clean svn download a few times, but not every time I tried something different
2. The only harfbuzz package I found is harfbuzz-git on AUR. I think this is a library that comes as part of other projects, such as Pango and Qt. And I have stock packages of those.

- Are you starting the build with a clean svn download?
- Do you have harfbuzz(-ng) installed on your system?

graysky: I have gcc-multilib and libtool-multilib in place of the corresponding base-devel packages, but other than that I have the whole base-devel

I'm using pacman from testing and no build problems. Also have the march=native construct. BUild 4371 just now as a test. Just a wild ass guess, but are you perhaps missing part of base-devel? Can you build it from a clean chroot?
