It seems to have fixed it. Thanks!

Based on popular packages, I've updated the version to go from simply the short hash to r(# of commits).(short hash). This should fix your issue, please let me know if it does or doesn't.

Something like that sounds like a good idea.
On a side note, my computer seems to be properly updating this package (now ver de122e7) but constantly thinks the installed version is out-of-date. I noticed the pkgver in the PKGBUILD doesn't match the latest commit on Github - would this be causing the problem?
Edit: However, some cursory reading on the archwiki PKGBUILD page seems to indicate that the pkgver() function will ensure this value is always updated. So maybe this is just a bug with cower or with your pkgver() function (but I'm woefully inexperienced with regex, however, so I can't actually check this at all).

Kirby is correct on that one. The program relies on the DESKTOP_SESSION environment variable to automatically set the desktop background. Most updates to this package (at this point at least) are related to updating the database for what commands to use to set which desktop. I was thinking of hosting a simple json list on the web that the program checks for its correct command; this would drastically reduce update frequency and resolve bug reports without having to upgrade to a new version. I'm open to suggestions on that one

A note here for Budgie users, since there's no wiki page for this package: If you use a .xinitrc file to manage your logins with 'startx', you need to add "export DESKTOP_SESSION=budgie-desktop" to it along with what the wiki page for Budgie already recommends. Otherwise wallpaper-reddit won't know how to set the background.
