This project improves on URW Garamond by adding "more advanced typographic features" (for instance, the "ffi" ligature): http://github.com/rbrito/urw-garamond
It uses the OTF format, so it needs to be converted for use with (pdf)latex, a task at which I failed due to my very poor knowledge of latex.
So I'm just dropping this here in case anyone is interested in writing a PKGBUILD for it. :)
