@orwell this is happening to me. But, I don't know where is the problem, on kernel, on KDE or on nvidiabl. But, a workaround (on KDE), is change the shortcut for brightness on global keyboard shortcuts.

thanks for the update !
i don't know why but i can't adjust the brightness level with the keyboard shortcuts anymore on my vaio laptop, only with the system settings panel (KDE).
not a big issue

Doesn't compile on Linux 3.2.1

A patch is available at my fork of nvidiabl at github:

Failing to compile on 3.2.0:

@uwinkelvos: Thanks a lot for your help. Pretty sure the xorg bit has fixed it and you were correct about the 'sudo echo 1 > ...' stuff.

uwinkelvos commented on 2011-11-28 02:01

0.72-2 now installs to extramodules, as allesandro suggested.

uwinkelvos commented on 2011-11-25 12:37

Hi guys, i kind of missed the last comments... dont think i got a notification mail.

@allesandro: i will update the package tonight or tomorrow. I just read Wonder's (Ionut) post about the extramodules dir, but i dont realy get the point. The module is working for me without recompiling on most kernel upgrades. (I guess it should when there is not any api/abi change)

@agias: My guess is that, something other than your DE (gonome?) is setting the brightness. try something like this in yourt xorg.conf:

Section "ServerLayout"
Identifier "ServerLayout0"
Option "BlankTime" "0"
Option "StandbyTime" "0"
Option "SuspendTime" "0"
Option "OffTime" "0"

to that other problem:
are you trying to do something like this?
"sudo echo 1 > /sys/class/brightness/nvidia_backlight/brightness" that wont work, as only echo is running as root, not the stream appender.
"echo 1 | sudo dd of=/sys/class/brightness/nvidia_backlight/brightness" or
"sudo su -c 'echo 1 > /sys/class/brightness/nvidia_backlight/brightness'"

that should work.
