The problem is the following line from the configure script:

printf "all:\\n\\t@echo \\\$(CC)\\n" | env -i make -sf -

I have no idea why it does not work anymore - probably some update to GNU make broke it... I just pushed an update which should fix it.

The build fails on my system in a chroot, e.g. aur sync -c mandoc with aurutils. Is that my system or is there a dependency missing?

make: echo: No such file or directory

Ah, true... it'd be more useful if other packages could just trigger a "update man-db" and it runs makewhatis.

Would it be possible to add a .install file alike to

https://git.archlinux.org/svntogit/packages.git/tree/trunk/man-db.install?h=packages/man-db

to run makewhatis on upgrade?
