The binary file download address has been changed to http://ds9.si.edu/download/ubuntu18/ds9.ubuntu18.8.0.1.tar.gz

Would it be possible to modify the ds9.desktop file in this way so that ds9 can be used to open FITS files? Thanks

DS9 hasn't updated their linux binary folders yet -- will update when those are available. See here: http://ds9.si.edu/download/linux64/

Thanks! I've added the icon. Please let me know if there are any issues.

Well I think a desktop file without a image seems to be strange...
Here I got an icon for you:
https://img.vim-cn.com/0d/1b655ba190ac4067ddd7efb95cec023754f3af.png
install it in the ${pkgdir}/usr/share/pixmaps and add the "Icon=ds9" line in ds9.desktop may give a good performance.
Also it might be a good idea to add Astronomy and Education in the "Categories" part of ds9.desktop.
