This is possible, since i installed cups after the driver. Perhaps this messed up some config. It is working anyway now, so i wont touch it again i guess. :)

I don't have this package installed on my system and the printer works fine. There are a lot of use cases where the printer driver is installed in a headless installation. BUT, I've added 'cups' as a dependency, because this package provides a cups driver. So, without cups it does not make much sense. Maybe this solves your problem too.

It probably was the easy way out.
For some context, in case it help: I am using the current gnome desktop. The printer dialog was complaining that 'some additional drivers' had to be installed, allthough it was showing the printer in the selection menu.
I then installed the system-config-printer which installed the printer without any problems and now gnome also show it as available.
I guess some config-magic would do the trick, but i dont know enough about cups to figure it out (and i just wanted to print, soo). :)

Thank you @JoeWinter, but I don't think a graphical frontend for CUPS is needed to get this working. But I will add it as a optdepends.

I had to install "system-config-printer" to make it work.

Some problem to install this AUR package with yaourt: it seems that this change in the build section fix the behavior:
< for i in $srcdir/*.deb; do
---
> for i in $startdir/*.deb; do
(interestingly the package build with makepkg seems to work without problem, I will report to yaourt dev)

I've added a patch to make the package systemd compatible. There is no more manual modification needed after the package is installed/updated. Thanks to Yurkin!
